Thanks to input and work to date by citizens in the Belfair community, the Belfair Wastewater and Water Reclamation Facilities Project is taking off. This project will protect and help restore Hood Canal.
Work is underway to design and implement a wastewater treatment and water reclamation system within Belfair. The project will build a safe, efficient and environmentally-friendly sewer system for key areas within the Belfair Urban Growth Area (UGA). This system, the first with new membrane technology in Mason County, is seen as a pivotal element vital to the health of Hood Canal. On a long-term basis the project will support the backbone for urban infrastructure in Belfair as mandated by the Growth Management Act. Mason County has hired CH2M HILL engineers to design this treatment system.
On a long-term basis, this project will convert septic systems within key areas of the Belfair UGA to an environmentally-friendly, county-operated sewer utility. These wastewater facilities are needed to provide a sustainable approach to water management that protects Hood Canal and treats wastewater to Class A standards for water reuse. Reuse of treated wastewater provides the highest and best use of local resources and protects Hood Canal.
The project team is committed to informing and involving Belfair citizens in this design process. Residents of the Belfair community can expect updates and informational public open houses as the project moves forward. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
